World Belly Dance Day was first conceptualized by Lydia Tzigane with the following in mind: “Our mission is to unite the initiative of many dancers around the world to celebrate the wonderful art of belly dance as a holiday on the second Saturday in May every year. We got inspired by the idea of holding an event that would serve as a reminder that belly dance is an ART form, a cultural event, a sport, and a social and family entertainment. Belly Dance Day is our way of reaching out and putting our beloved dance form in a nice and different light, by holding an event that would be “family-rated” with all profit going to charity.”
The Cape Town celebration of World Belly Dance Day – will be hosted by Tenille Lindeque for the 5th time this year. Please join us in supporting this worthy cause and let us unite hands and hips for the love of the dance. All profits raised on the day will be donated to St Georges Home for Girls.
There will be stunning performances by studios from all over South Africa, the usual belly dance themed fashion show, a variety of food and goods vendors and we’re even introducing a few workshops on the day.
Our mass group drum solo lesson and performance between 1:30 and 2pm. This is often the highlight of the days’ events as the energy of all the dancers combined is something really special and a great experience! We would love to encourage everyone who attends the festival to participate in this part of the day. For more info, click here
Hope to see you there!!!

We are excited to be performing at the Cape Town International Tattoo Convention this year.
Now going into its 5th year, this event has evolved into the most important lifestyle festival of its kind. With a greater range of international artists attending a very ambitious art events schedule and their biggest and best concert schedule to date, this year’s Cape Town Tattoo Expo promises to be the best one yet.
Catch the RNDC Dancers on Sunday, 27 January between 12 and 2 pm at the City Hall, Cape Town.

Received quite a few queries for workshops in Cape Town.
These will be my last series of workshops for 2012, so dont miss out!
Venue: THE BALLET ROOM, GROVE PRIMARY – Grove Avenue, Claremont
This is a good introductory workshop for all levels, which deals with building relations to the key muscle groups used in tribal fusion to accomplish controlled, isolated and strong movement, utilizing conditioning and drills. Technique points such as posture and interior versus exterior moves as well as various turns/spins will also be dealt with.
Tribal Fusion Choreo Workshop – Mon, 17 Dec 2012,6.15 – 7.45pm
A choreo-based workshop. Be prepared to sweat! Some bellydance experience an advantage, but not a must!

Nix, who heads up our ATS department of Soma, has thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to informally dance ATS with women from all over the world. She is very keen to spread her love & knowledge of American Tribal Style in Cape Town & South Africa and to dance ATS with others. Over 2009 – 2012, Nix has had ongoing training in both Classic and Modern ATS with Fat Chance Bellydance (FCBD, San Francisco), Megha Gavin of Deyvani Dance Company, Phillipa & Jesse of Moirai and Devi Mamak of Australia. She is a member of a dance duet troupe collaboration Ter’zím UK/SA, and has attained FCBD Teacher Training I & II certifications and Sister Studio Status.
Sister Studio Status upholds a global ideal of community, respect and instruction quality so that students can expect to receive standardized tuition no matter which ATS class they may visit worldwide.
Nix began regular training (2007) & teacher apprenticeship (2009-2011) with her Belgian teacher & mentor Hilde Cannoodt in the UK before returning to Cape Town permanently in 2011.
She continues to grow her knowledge in dance and safety by cross training and attending Tribal Fusion, Contemporary, Ballet and Hip hop classes & has attended an extensive number of dance workshops in Europe and America over 2007-2012. Nix also teaches weekly Soma ATS Level 1 and 2 classes in Woodstock, Curvespace Studios. Check out www.soma.co.za for more info.
